Local is our favorite word!

July 5, 2018

The tourism industry in Alaska continues to grow, as more people around the world want to witness the magic of the 49th state.  That growth means more choices on where to go and what to do, and wading through those myriad options can be daunting! At Traverse Alaska, we take pride in the local connections we’ve forged and the unique experiences that we can share with our clients because of our commitment to finding the true gems of Alaska that are off the beaten path.

The community in our home base of Denali is strong and tight-knit.  From potlucks to house projects, pitching in to watch neighborhood kids, growing small local businesses, and enjoying our backyard wilderness together, the folks that choose to live in Denali year-round are especially kind and generous.

Our guides are a part of this community and want to share the welcoming spirit of rural Alaska with our guests. We do this by taking our clients to the best locally-owned coffee shops and restaurants in the area, by providing recommendations for other activities and for shops that share our values, and ensuring that our guests stay in tasteful, comfortable lodging that is locally-owned and operated after a day (or more!) of adventures with us.

Furthermore, Joe and the Traverse Alaska team have cultivated relationships with excellent service providers all across Alaska.  We carefully vet the places we recommend to our clients, making sure that the places we suggest to visitors are places we would go ourselves, or take our families to.

Alaska is an enormous state with incredible variety, and we want you come away with an unforgettable experience. That means starting with the local spots you won’t always find in the fancy brochures.

If you guessed a few days ago—you are correct! It still looks like winter in some areas in Denali right now. We’re actually skiing to scout some of our summer area routes. As always, we are ready to adapt to whatever Mother Nature decides to throw our way and have a great time outside (even if it means using our winter gear for getting around!).
